A STATEMENT OF THE INTER-RELIGIOUS SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT FOR PEACE (IRSMP) ON THE CURRENT CRISIS OF SECURITY AND PEACE IN ZAMBOANGA CITY E-mail

IN the past four months or so, there have been at least 60 killings committed in public, in the streets of Zamboanga City, majority of them remaining unsolved.  Most of the victims were apparently unarmed, innocent civilians, some of them killed in bold and brazen manners.  The perpetrators are roaming our streets, turning the city into a dizzying killing field while residents tremble for their lives.

This situation is a serious cause for concern for every citizen of the city, a threat to everyone’s personal security and peace of mind.

STATEMENT OF THE INTER-RELIGIOUS SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT FOR PEACE AND PEACE ADVOCATES ZAMBOANGA CONDEMNING THE ARMED ATTACK ON THE CITIZENS OF ISABELA CITY, BASILAN PROVINCE ON APRIL 13, 2010. E-mail

Peace be to all.

On April 13, 2010, more than 20 armed men disguised as military and police personnel and later alleged to be members of the lawless Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) struck treacherously and violently in the heart of Isabela City.  They shot innocent civilians and unready soldiers, killing as many as 15, reports say.  They set and exploded bombs, including one that damaged the main Roman Catholic cathedral and wounded churchgoers.

This assault in a province plagued by a history of violence and impunity but reveals a further moral deterioration and depravity of the attackers.  We condemn this senseless, evil act of barbarism and banditry.  We appeal to authorities to take swift and appropriate action to catch and punish the culprits.

A STATEMENT BY PEACE ADVOCATES ZAMBOANGA ON THE BEHEADING OF PATIKUL, SULU SCHOOL PRINCIPAL GABRIEL CANIZARES. E-mail

A SHAMELESS act.

A STATEMENT BY PEACE ADVOCATES ZAMBOANGA ON THE BEHEADING OF PATIKUL
Reportedly angry over the amount they collected because it was much less than the ransom they were demanding, the criminal kidnappers of school principal Gabriel Canizares beheaded him, and his severed head and body were separately found at different locations in Jolo on November 9. When kidnappers such as these, whether they are the mujaheedins or some fanatics they claim to be, cheapen life and insult civilized people by killing a defenseless and innocent man like Canizares, they in truth cheapen, defile and doom themselves and all that they claim to stand or fight for. And how especially ‘way sipug – Tausug for shameless - it is of them when they kidnap poor public school teachers like Canizares and the others before him just for a money to fill their selfish, evil appetites.

An Appeal for the Freedom of Fr. Michael Sinnott E-mail

michael_sinnott(A statement by Peace Advocates Zamboanga.)

THE kidnapping of Irish priest Fr. Michael Sinnott last Sunday, October 11, in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur is yet another serious assault against our hallowed belief in the sacredness of every human life, against the democratic order that enables us to live in dignity, security and peace as a community and society of God-fearing and law-abiding citizens.

The old age of 79 year-old Fr. Sinnott and the fact that he devoted much of his life to serve the poor and marginalized people of Mindanao, especially those in our home region, including indigenous and peoples of other religious faiths, make this kidnapping extraordinarily cruel and saddening. The value of Fr. Sinnott’s life and work is beyond any ransom price. For its despicable and unspeakable evil and barbarity do we strongly condemn this kidnapping of a holy man.
